When Martin and Laura went to the glacier with the Helicopter, they had one site that they could not get to work. The Q330 would start up, but then shut down when it tried to spin up the bailer. They brought home the Q330 and we tested in the lab; worked fine when hooked up to a fresh battery. So, the following weekend, I took the Q330, a bailer and a fresh set of batteries to Ultima Thule Lodge, and flew out to the site with Paul Claus in his Alpha cub on 35 inch bushwheels. We landed at station SMEL and got the site up and running again. Then, we downloaded GPS data at MILR. On the way back, we saw an unusual moulin where a large stream was falling into the Tana glacier so fast that is was blowing a column of spray into the air.

      • Loading up to leave SMEL
      • Back taxi for upglacier departure.
      • After landing at station MILR. We had to hurry; the fog you can see downglacier from the plane is moving up towards us.
      • Back taxi at MILR.
      • We overflew the uppermost station (JNPR) to see if it had fallen into the crack yet. So far, so good.
